O guitarrista do Queen, Brian May, compartilhou um artigo do Spectator intitulado "Vitória de Bohemian Rhapsody no Oscar é um triunfo sobre os críticos de filmes esnobes", e escreveu um texto sobre as críticas que o filme recebeu desde sua estreia. Confira:

"Bem, sim. Vocês viram que eu fui embora muito silenciosamente do Oscar depois que ele acabou, sinalizando o fim de uma temporada de premiações. O que realmente aconteceu? Nós abrimos a cerimônia de uma maneira que NUNCA havia acontecido antes, em uma avalanche de empolgação, olhando para uma ovação de uma audiência que trazia muitos de nossos heróis, vibrando e cantando conosco. Nós, então, surpreendentemente, saímos com 4 Oscars, o maior vencedor da noite. O responsável pela produção da noite veio até nós e apertou minha mão enquanto deixávamos o auditório. Ele disse 'eu faço o Oscar há 40 anos e esta foi a melhor abertura que já tivemos'. Um momento adorável.

Então todos assumiram que nós continuariamos fazendo festa, sem nenhuma preocupação. Mas eu não sou este tipo de pessoa. Eu estava, e estou, profundamente agradecido por nosso filme do Freddie ter sido reconhecido de um modo que nunca tinhamos a audácia de imaginar. Mas eu achei a atividade do público nesta temporada de premiações, e o comportamento dos jornalistas da mídia, profundamente perturbador. Se você olhar a imprensa e as discussões na Internet que se passaram nos últimos meses, você verá que 90% é focado em discreditar um ou outro, ou todos os filmes indicados, com sugestões e desprezos, ao invés de admirá-los pelos méritos e as habilidades necessárias para produzi-los. Acidez e desonestidade e tentativas absurdas de envergonhar e influenciar os membros votantes do jeito que eles gostariam de votar. Não é culpa dos paineis eleitores. Eles se saíram bem. É um tipo de doença vingativa que parece ter contagiado a vida pública.

Durante todo este tempo, eu fiquei calado, tentando não influenciar os resultados dos votos nem por um fio. Mas quando a cortina caiu, eu acabei com sentimentos muito mistos. Eles persistiram até que eu li este ótimo artigo no Spectator. Corajoso, verdadeiro. E eu não preciso explicar. Está tudo lá."

Well, yes. You saw I went very quiet after the Oscars were over, signalling the end of the whole movie awards season. What really happened ? We opened the Academy Awards show in a way it’s NEVER been opened before, in an avalanche of excitement, looking out on an instant standing ovation from a glittering audience containing many of our heroes, all beaming and singing with us and punching the air. We then, shockingly, walked away with 4 Oscars - the top haul of the night. The head of local production came up to me and shook my hand as we left the auditorium. He said “ I’ve been doing the Oscars for 40 years, and that was the best opening we ever had !” A lovely moment. So - everyone assumes that we would then all go forth, deliriously partying with not a care in the world. But I guess I’m not that kind of animal. I was, and I am, deeply grateful for our Freddie film being recognised in a way we never had the audacity to expect. But I found the public activity behind the whole awards season, and the behaviour of the media writers surrounding it, deeply disturbing. If you look at the Press and Internet discussions that took place over the last few months, you can see that 90% of it is aimed at discrediting one or other, or all of the nominated films by innuendo and smears, rather than discussing their merits and admiring the skills that went into making them. Vitriol and dishonesty, and blatant attempts to shame and influence the members into voting the way they, in their arrogance required them to. It’s not the fault of the awards panels - they stood up well. It’s a kind of vindictive sickness that seems to have gripped public life. All through it, I’ve been biting my tongue, not wishing to influence the results of the ballots even by a hair. But, when the curtain came down, I was left with very mixed feelings. They persisted until I read this VERY well thought and well written article in the Spectator. Brave, truthful - and now I don’t have to explain. It’s all here.
